Lalo - Marine

Lalo (1883)

Souvent je rêve, o chère enfant,
Que nous errons seuls loin du monde,
Au gré de la vague et du vent,
Sur la mer houleuse et profonde!

La vaste mer aux flots plombés,
Gronde sombre et mystétieuse,
Et nous sommes seuls absorbés
Dans notre extase insoucieuse!...

La vague bondit en fureur!
Je te tiens dans mes bras serrée!
Et plus sauvage encor mon cœur
Bat dans ma poitrine enfiévrée!

Mon amour fier et triomphant
Grandit au bruit de la tourmente,
Et toi sur mon sein, chère enfant,
Tu te rejettes frissonnante,

Tu lèves d'un air anxieux
Vers moi ta prunelle azurée,
Tu lis le bonheur dans mes yeux,
Et tu me souris rassurée!

Comme des coursiers épuisés,
Les flots retombent blancs d'écume.
Peu à peu les vents apaisés
S'endorment sur la mer qui fume,

Et moi comme un Dieu bienheureux
Sur tes yeux je fais en silence
Pleuvoir des baisers plus nombreux
Que les astres du ciel immense!

André Theuriet

Often I dream, o dear child,
that we are drifting alone far from the world,
at the will of the wave and the wind,
over the swelling and deep sea!

the vast sea with its leaden waves,
grumbles, dark and mysterious,
et we alone are absorbed
in our carefree ecstasy!...

The wave leaps in fury!
I hold you tight in my arms!
And wilder still my heart
beats in my fevered chest!

My proud and triumphant love
grows to the sound of the tumult,
and you upon my breast, dear child,
you abandon yourself, shivering,

with an anxious gaze towards me
you raise your azure eyes,
you read the happiness in my eyes,
and you smile at me, reassured!

Like exhausted coursers,
the waves fall back, white with spume.
Little by little the appeased winds
fall asleep over the steaming sea,

and I, like a contented God,
in silence I let kisses, more numerous
than the stars in the vast sky,
fall like rain upon your eyes!
