Aimons-nous et dormons

Debussy

text by Théodore Faullin de Banville

Let us love and sleep

Let us love and sleep
without thought for the rest of the world!
Neither the swell of the sea, nor the storm in the mountains
would sway your blonde head
whilst we still love each other,
for love is stronger
than the Gods or Death!

The sun would be extinguished
so as to leave your whiteness more pure,
the wind that bends the forest trees to the ground
would, in passing, not dare
to caress your hair
whilst you hide
your head in my arms!

And once our two hearts
rise up to the joyful heavens
where the celestial lilies will bloom, watered by our tears,
then, like two flowers,
let us join our loving lips
and see if we cannot exhaust
death in a single kiss!
