Roussel - Light

Light

Roussel (1918)

Des larmes ont coulé
D'un cœur secret et tendre
Qui se crut exilé.
Que n'ai-je su comprendre,
Quand je m'en suis allé,
Ce cœur secret et tendre.
Une bouche a parlé,
Triste douceur d'entendre
Aujourd'hui révélé
Ce cœur secret et tendre.

Des larmes ont coulé
Que n'ai-je su comprendre,
Mais pouvais-je m'attendre
A ce ciel étoilé.

Georges Jean-Aubry

Light

Tears flowed
from a secret and tender heart
which thought itself banished.
How was I unable to understand
that secret and tender heart
as I was leaving.
A mouth spoke,
sad sweetness to hear
that secret and tender heart
today revealed.

Tears flowed.
How was I unable to understand.
But could I have expected
this star filled heaven?
